COVID-19 Vaccine Available for Ages 5-11

website (11)

On Nov. 2, the CDC endorsed the CDC Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices’ (ACIP) recommendation that children 5 to 11 years old be vaccinated against COVID-19 with the Pfizer-BioNTech pediatric vaccine.

The CDC now expands vaccine recommendations to about 28 million children in the United States in this age group and allows providers to begin vaccinating them as soon as possible.

St. Louis County Department of Health to begin vaccinating children aged 5-11 Saturday at John C. Murphy Health Center

On Saturday, Nov. 6th, DPH will begin administering doses of COVID-19 vaccine to children aged 5 to 11 at John C. Murphy Health Center, 6121 North Hanley Road in Berkeley.

As discussed by County Executive Dr. Sam Page, the move follows the CDC’s decision on Tuesday evening to authorize the Pfizer vaccine for children in that age group. Vaccinations are dependent on the supply of the youth vaccine, which is controlled by the state of Missouri. DPH has received its first shipment of 300 doses of the youth vaccine and is working with the state to expand that supply.

Residents who are interested may make an appointment for their eligible children to be vaccinated by visiting ReviveSTL.com. The first vaccinations for children aged 5-11 are scheduled from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at John C. Murphy. However, vaccinations will only be offered until supply runs out.

If supply allows, vaccinations of children in this age group will be available Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at DPH’s three permanent clinics starting next week. Those clinics are the John C. Murphy Health Center; the North Central Community Health Center at  4000 Jennings Station Rd.; and the South County Health Center at 4580 S Lindbergh Blvd.

In addition, John C. Murphy Health Center will offer Saturday hours of 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Nov. 13 and Nov. 20, and the South County Health Center will offer vaccinations until 7 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays through Nov. 30. DPH is also planning to offer vaccinations for children aged 5 – 11 at St. Louis County Library branches starting next week.

Youth Transmission Update

After an initial spike during the first month of the school year, COVID-19 cases among students in school have steadily declined and are now at their lowest since the school year began. This is due to the tireless efforts of the leaders and staff of the schools in Saint Louis County to implement COVID-19 prevention protocols. DPH is grateful for all that they are doing to keep kids in school safely. During the week ending on October 23, DPH identified 181 student cases of COVID and 31 staff cases of COVID in County public and private schools in the ninth week of classes, leading to quarantine for 1,090 individuals.

Community transmission remains high among children in St. Louis County. The number of new cases per day is almost three times higher than it was in June of this year. Children have some of the highest rates of disease and percent positivity among St Louis County residents. To keep children safe, it is important to continue to do what has worked thus far – universal masking and increased testing in order to reduce community transmission. The other tool to keep children safe is the COVID-19 vaccination. Now that the CDC has recommended the Pfizer-BioNTech pediatric vaccine for children ages 5 to 11, DPH encourages parents to get their children vaccinated as soon as possible.

Being able to provide COVID-19 vaccinations to children ages 5 to 11 will have a significant impact on slowing the spread of the virus. The numbers in this update come from a new DPH brief on youth COVID transmission.

Please consult with your doctor and pediatrician on what's right for your family.
